ison_dolphins.RdThese data contain the frequent associations between the 62 dolphins of a community of bottlenose dolphins living in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand. The network was constructed from systematic boat surveys of the fjord over seven years, from November 1994 to November 2001. Each time a school of dolphins was encountered, its adult members were photographed and identified by the natural markings on their dorsal fins, which gave the composition of 1,292 schools. How closely two dolphins associated was measured by a half-weight index, and compared to the index expected when the members of the schools are permuted at random. A tie joins a pair of 'preferred companions': two dolphins that were seen in the same school more often than expected by chance. Lusseau (2003) reports 64 adult individuals; the 62 here are those of the network that Lusseau and Newman (2004) share, with the same 159 ties.
